Why Yankees aren't bringing healthy Anthony Volpe back to MLB originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The New York Yankees had to make an Anthony Volpe roster decision on Sunday.

He had reached the 20-day maximum of his rehab assignment as he recovered from his left shoulder injury. Would they call him up to the major leagues, or would they option him down to the minors?

They chose to keep him in the minor leagues, according to multiple reports on Sunday night.

Can confirm @Joelsherman1’s report. The Yankees have optioned Anthony Volpe to the minors.

Volpe has appeared at both Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre while rehabbing, and it's not clear where he's been assigned yet.

But it won't be the Bronx right now.

Why aren't the Yankees bringing Anthony Volpe back to MLB?

This is a two-pronged reality, having to do both with Volpe and Jose Caballero.

Volpe's bat hasn't been strong as he has rehabbed, and with that left shoulder potentially being a detriment to his full power, the Yankees may feel like he isn't fully ready to contribute at the MLB level.

And then with the Yanks right now, Caballero has a .719 OPS and 12 stolen bases already while playing solid defense. He has filled in for Volpe since Opening Day, and right now, the Yankees have decided to let Caballero keep the job.

Volpe could be promoted at any time, so it's no guarantee he's in the minor leagues for long. Right now, though, that's where he's staying.
