The decision actually makes a lot of sense.

But it's still a bit surprising that the New York Yankees have kept Randal Grichuk on the MLB roster for Opening Day and have sent down both Jasson Dominguez and Oswaldo Cabrera.

MLB.com reported Saturday that Grichuk, the 34-year old who was signed as a non-roster invite to Spring Training, will be with the Yanks on Opening Day.

He's on a contract for $2.5 million for the season if he remains in the major leagues.

Grichuk wasn't necessarily in the plans, but he made sense in the end.

Why did Yankees keep Randal Grichuk in MLB, not Jasson Dominguez?

This is all about roster construction and handedness.

Grichuk is a right-handed hitter, which is a key contrast to lefty outfielders Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham.

In his career, Grichuk has an .819 OPS against left-handed pitchers. That's a great number, and it has remained solid even in recent seasons.

Dominguez, of course, is a switch-hitter, but his sides of the plate aren't created equally. He's much worse against left-handed pitching (while batting from the right side).

The Yanks want Dominguez to get full-time action at Triple-A, which he wouldn't come close to in MLB behind Bellinger, Grisham and Aaron Judge.

Grichuk makes much more sense as a bench option who plays occasionally.

Dominguez has some work to do, and in the meantime, the Yankees will hope Grichuk can perform admirably in pinstripes.
