Game 1 of the NBA Finals ended on a sour note for the San Antonio Spurs. After leading by one with 2:16 to go, San Antonio went flat at the worst possible time as the New York Knicks closed the game on a 11-0 run.
While the loss doesn't fall entirely on Victor Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox's shoulders, both struggled offensively, going a combined 9 of 34 from the field. Wemby knows he and Fox are capable of more, particularly in late-game scenarios. That's why he's not fretting having to play catch-up this early in the series.
"We had the momentum until late in that game," Wembanyama said, per ESPN. "That's why I said we let that one go. It's almost not like I have anything to figure out. It's almost like I have to play normal, not even good [in Game 2]. It's just [about] doing the right things enough. When we play bad, when I play bad, is when we shoot ourselves in the foot. This is why I'm not worried. We're going to be so much better. I'm going to be so much better."
It was a mixed bag. Wembanyama's shot wasn't falling, but he attacked the rim frequently enough to get 13 free throw attempts, and he nailed 12 of them. His defensive impact was also massive as he tallied three blocks and altered countless others.
While the Knicks are a serious threat, the sky is not falling here. In NBA Finals history, 19 teams have won Game 1 of the road but only eight have gone on to win the series. The Spurs have no reason to panic as long as they take care of business at home on Friday.
