Why the Mets, Phillies aren't playing today as MLB schedule is hit by World Cup originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
It's not often that MLB teams have a Friday off on the schedule.
The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies are facing one of those rare occurrences, though. They aren't playing on Friday night.
They actually opened their series on Thursday, a game the Mets won, 6-4.
They'll be back at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday and Sunday, but they aren't there on Friday.

Why aren't the Mets and Phillies playing tonight?
The World Cup is the reason these teams are off.
Right next door, Lincoln Financial Field (home of the Eagles) is hosting a match between Brazil and Haiti at 8:30 p.m. ET.
The huge Brazilian fanbase will pack the downtown area with people, vehicles and more. It'll be a huge scene of controlled chaos.
Because the games would've started within about an hour of one another, and maybe finished even closer together, the city of Philadelphia decided to keep things a bit calmed down by not playing a baseball game on Friday.
When do the Mets and Phillies play again?
They're back in action on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. ET.
They'll then play on Sunday Night Baseball at 7:20 p.m. ET to close out the series.
