The Cleveland Cavaliers have less than a week to determine what they are going to do with their first-round pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.

Cleveland has the rights to the No. 29 overall selection, and there is certainly a compelling case to be made for why the Wine and Gold should hold on to the pick and make a selection.

However, there are also good reasons the Cavaliers should explore trading the pick.

More Financial Flexibility

Payroll and saving money will continue to be a theme of Cleveland’s offseason, and it could play into what the Cavaliers do with their first-round pick.

Every dollar the Cavaliers save will help them get closer to getting out of the second apron. The No. 29 pick will make roughly $2.3 million during their rookie season, and that’s not a small amount considering the financial bind Cleveland is in.

If the player Cleveland wants at No. 29 is off the board, or the Cavaliers feel they could draft their draft target in the second round, it might be worth moving the pick to save money.

Package The Pick In A Trade

On its own, the penultimate pick in the first round doesn’t hold a ton of value. However, in a potential trade package, it could be worth a

If the Cavaliers end up making a selection at No. 29, it’d be shocking if that player cracks the rotation during their rookie season.

With that in mind, Cleveland could explore packaging the pick to either eliminate one of its bad contracts or add another veteran to help the team win next year.

Would the Phoenix Suns be interested in acquiring No. 29 and Dennis Schroder for Royce O'Neale?

A Trade Could Create Future Assets

If draft night doesn't fall the way the Cavaliers want, and Cleveland doesn't believe there is a prospect worth drafting when it's on the clock, trading the pick for another future first-round pick or multiple seconds would give the Cavaliers future assets to work with.

Cleveland already doesn't have a ton of future draft capital in the first place, so trading the pick might at least give the front office some more options down the road. Besides, the goal for next season should be winning a championship, not entirely about player development.
