The Denver Broncos may soon be making a noteworthy addition to the roster with the team's first preseason game fast approaching.
The Broncos are well into training camp, taking a close look at each of the 91 players on the roster and getting a feel for which ones will help comprise the final 53-man roster. However, there is a player who coach Sean Payton knows better than just about anyone in the league who could soon be joining the team.
The idea of Taysom Hill coming to Denver has long been discussed due to his connection to Payton, who turned him from a player with seemingly nowhere to go in the league into one of the more productive multi-dimensional players the league has ever seen.
Recently, Payton almost encouraged that talk to continue, stating, "There's no hurry right now, I'm going to see him here in five days so... we'll see where he's at and kind of go from there". Payton was, of course, alluding to the fact that he will see Hill at the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony this Saturday, where he'll be presenting Drew Brees for enshrinement. That would be a good time to open that discussion and find out whether or not Hill, who spent the past nine seasons with the New Orleans Saints, even wants to continue his playing career.
This is far from a foregone conclusion, but the idea of the Broncos adding the soon-to-be 36-year-old makes plenty of sense.
Hill would likely join the team's revamped tight end room, where the Broncos already have some tough decisions to make. Evan Engram will be back as the team's starting tight end, but the additions of Justin Joly and Dallen Bentley in the draft give the team some intriguing depth this summer, particularly after re-signing Adam Trautman, Lucas Krull and Nate Adkins this offseason.
The addition of Hill would likely be bad news for a guy such as second-year player Caleb Lohner, who is looking to get off the roster bubble and make the team this year. Should the team sign Hill, that would make it quite difficult for Lohner to win a spot. It would also push other tight ends out of contention as well.
But Hill would not be used as a traditional tight end and the Broncos wouldn't sign him because they need another tight end. It's the intangibles and flexibility that he brings to a team that have kept him around the league for so long, and that is what the Broncos would be looking to take advantage of. Though Hill can play tight end, he came into the league as a quarterback. He can line up at fullback, slot receiver and personal protector in punt formation. His ability to make plays all over the field gives a creative play caller like Payton, and now Davis Webb, a wide range of possibilities.
Taking a look back at one of the biggest plays from the 2025 season, the Broncos, already leading the New England Patriots 7-0 in the AFC Championship Game, decided to go for it on 4th-and-1 from the Patriots' 14-yard line early in the second quarter. Payton dialed up a short pass from Jarrett Stidham to RJ Harvey, which almost looked like a busted play because the execution was so bad.
That turnover on downs gave the Patriots new life and many onlookers pointed to that play as the biggest reason the Broncos lost a chance to go to the Super Bowl. In a future situation, Hill, because of his versatility, is most likely going to get that first down either as a ball carrier or the guy throwing the ball.
He would be a perfect situational chess piece for the Broncos, and if there is mutual interest between the two sides, it's a deal that makes too much sense not to happen.
