Jalen Pitre got himself some attention on Sunday Night Football.

The Houston Texans safety navigated a sweet interception of Patrick Mahomes against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Pitre jumped in the way of a pass, tipped it in the air, then spun himself around to track down the tipped ball and reel it in.

He was a bit more noticeable because of what was on his head.

It looked like a much larger helmet, but that's not exactly what it was.

Why does Jalen Pitre's helmet look different?​


Pitre doesn't actually have a different helmet.

Instead, he's wearing a Guardian Cap.

It's a soft-shell cover that goes over the standard helmet. It's meant to reduce concussions and head injuries.

Guardian Caps were first allowed to be worn on NFL practice fields in 2020.

The first time players could wear Guardian Caps in games was 2024.

Pitre was concussed in Week 9.

When he returned in Week 13, he came back with a Guardian Cap. He's clearly trying to avoid any injury like that again.
