Southside High School is trying to change its name when it comes to athletics with the Alabama High School Athletic Association.
The school previously competed as Southside-Gadsden, but on Wednesday, Aug. 5, the Etowah County Board of Education announced the school was requesting to be known as Southside-Rainbow City for athletic purposes by the AHSAA. The official name for academic purposes will stay as Southside High School.
"The purpose of this update is to provide a more accurate geographic distinction and better reflect the communities served by Southside High School," Etowah County School superintendent Julie Talton wrote in a statement to The Gadsden Times.
The school is hoping to change its name for AHSAA schedules, rankings and other forms of communication. The change is something that school leaders have been trying to work towards for the last few years. The school pulls students from both the City of Southside and Rainbow City and hoping that the new name helps represents both communities.
"This change is about accurately representing our students, our school, and these communities. We appreciate the organizations that worked with us to make this update, and we believe it strengthens the identity of Southside High School and its connection to Rainbow City," Talton said.
