Why Son Heung-min isn't starting for South Korea tonight with lots on line in Group A at World Cup originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
South Korea isn't starting Son Heung-min on Wednesday night against South Africa.
It's a shocking lineup call by the Korean squad to bench the captain on the final match day of Group A play in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Son, the former Tottenham star who now plays in MLS for LAFC, will have a chance to make an impact off the bench.
They might need that, because South Korea probably needs at least a draw to ensure advancement to the knockout stages.

Why isn't Son starting for South Korea?
The Koreans apparently have decided to shake things up.
Son didn't score in either of their first two matches.
They line up like this instead:

South Korea might think Son will be more fresh coming off the bench. Or maybe he's nursing an injury.
The hope for all involved with the South Korean team will be that they advance and that Son can start in the Round of 32, regardless of the reason for his benching on Wednesday night.
