In a College Football Playoff world, one where a single loss can make or break a postseason berth, Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer is on board with the active importance of a SEC Championship Game.

"I think that our team really felt strong about winning it when you’re in that moment," DeBoer said Tuesday, May 26 at SEC spring meetings. "Looking back on it, there are some things that were just a struggle, when you look at kind of where the team was at physically, whether it’s before or after. But that’s part of it. Our opponent, Georgia, had the same situation. They did a better job, obviously, of being ready for that game."

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey affirmed his commitment to the conference championship game at APSE's annual Southeast Region meeting Monday, May 11, a message he continued to push during the first day of spring meetings, highlighting the SEC's contract to play the game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta through 2021.

DeBoer's first appearance in the SEC Championship Game was a 28-7 shellacking by Georgia against Alabama. But while the Crimson Tide "fell well short," DeBoer said, it remains important.

"We got to have experiences together," DeBoer said. "I think you can always talk about what other teams went through, or what this program’s done. But until you've been in the fight together and you have those experiences that you can draw on, good and bad, that’s really what we can remember and what we can learn from."
