Overtime. Game 7. It doesn't get better than this.
The Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens are tied 2-2 trying to reach the Eastern Conference Final.
The Carolina Hurricanes await, but it wasn't decided in regulation.
The Habs led 2-0. The Sabres got both goals back.
Buckle up.
Why isn't it 3-on-3?
The NHL playoffs don't operate the way the regular season does.
The league doesn't want games to last forever in the regular season, so they got 3-on-3 for a quicker ending.
They don't want to change the regulation format in the postseason, though, so it stays 5-on-5.
How long is NHL playoff overtime?
NHL playoff games play 5-on-5 hockey until the game is over.
Each overtime period lasts 20 minutes, like a regulation period.
But at the end of 20 minutes, it's like the end of a period. Teams get a break, the ice gets spruced up, and then they come out with switched benches.
What is longest NHL playoff overtime game?
The longest game was in in 1936 when the Red Wings beat the Montreal Maroons in six overtime periods which featured 116 minutes and 30 seconds of extra game time.
The most recent marathon game was in 2023 when the Florida Panthers beat the Hurricanes in four overtimes.
