The New York Yankees acquired Ryan McMahon last season from the Colorado Rockies in a trade to play third base.
On Wednesday night, McMahon is playing shortstop.
It's different, but it's part of the lineup that Aaron Boone arrived at for the Yankees' matchup with the A's.
McMahon was tested right away, a backhand play in the top of the first inning that he bounced the throw to first base, getting some help from Ben Rice on the pick.
It's not clear whether this will continue, but for a night, McMahon got the start at short.

Why is Ryan McMahon playing shortstop?
McMahon is playing shortstop to see if he can help the Yanks out at that spot.
It also keeps Amed Rosario in the lineup at third base the night after he hit two home runs.
The Yankees got McMahon reps at shortstop during the spring so he could be a backup option at that spot if needed.
McMahon had played three innings at shortstop in his MLB career before thie season, all in 2020.
He has played more than 700 of his games at third base, but also 244 at second base and 70 at first base.
His bat is struggling right now, but maybe the move to a different spot will change McMahon's mindset and help him hit his stride.
