The Las Vegas Raiders executed a mini surprise on Tuesday by releasing veteran linebacker Germaine Pratt from his contract. The decision comes four games into a one-year, $4.8 million contract. Even with $3.75 million left behind in dead money, the Raiders made the correct decision to release Pratt.

Despite not carrying an injury designation, Pratt mysteriously didn't travel with the Raiders to Indianapolis for the 40-6 Week 5 beatdown to the Colts. That was a telltale sign that a disagreement between Pratt and the Raiders were brewing. Pete Carroll shouldn't waste his time with players who aren't buying in.

Prior to that development, Pratt had played 88 percent of the defensive snaps in the Raiders' first four games of the season. The veteran linebacker had notched 25 tackles. Pratt had been playing a versatile role as an occasional edge rusher and off-ball linebacker. His role on the defense will be replaced by Malcolm Koonce and Charles Snowden at EDGE, and Jamal Adams, at linebacker. Elandon Roberts and Devin White should remain the full-time starters at linebacker. This also potentially opens up opportunities for Tommy Eichenberg and Cody Lindenberg to get more playing time.

A rift between Carroll and Pratt likely developed, potentially over his defensive duties. The Raiders made the correct decision to sever ties. Onwards and upwards.
