The Boston Red Sox scored one of the most bizarre runs you'll see in a baseball game thanks to a scoreboard error and some major mental mistakes from everyone on the field.
On Monday, the Red Sox were visiting the Toronto Blue Jays for a mid-August AL East series. With the Blue Jays up 2-0 in the top of the seventh inning, the Red Sox were looking to get on the scoresheet with runners on first and third with one out. While the broadcast graphics clearly said there was one out in the top of the seventh, the center field scoreboard in Toronto incorrectly displayed that there were two outs when Ceddanne Rafaela was up to bat.
What then happened was complete chaos. Rafaela popped the ball up to center field, yet the two Red Sox runners started to run the bases like there were two outs, with Anthony Seigler running to home without tagging at third. The Blue Jays also seemed confused as to how many outs there were, as they correctly executed the double play, but pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson and catcher Brandon Valenzuela started to walk off the field after the catch like the inning was over.
As expected, this created incredible confusion on the field in Toronto as the umpire attempted to sort things out, even going to a rules check in New York due to the weirdness of it all.
At the end of a 15 minute delay, the umpires announced that the Red Sox ended up earning a run on Seigler crossing home even though he didn't tag third. But why? Well, according to Sportsnet reporter Hazel Mae who talked to Max Scherzer, the Blue Jays were waved off by the home plate umpire and then couldn't appeal the decision because Richardson and Valenzuela walked off the field.
The Blue Jays did end up with the 2-1 win at the end of the night, but given everything it seems as if the Red Sox shouldn't have been given a run out of all of that chaos. It will be interesting to see if we get something more official on the matter now that the game has ended.
