OXFORD — Pete Golding is wary of a pitfall that comes with climbing the career ladder in college football.
"I think what naturally happens in this profession is, as you start moving up, you get away from what you do really well," the Ole Miss football coach said April 7. "You spread yourself so thin and try to manage so many different things that you end up not being good at anything."
The organization of defensive staff is simple. Bryan Brown is defensive coordinator, and Golding's defensive background will help on that side. On offense, Golding has organized his offensive staff with that pitfall in mind.
It's why Golding has two coaches on offense with titles that, at first glance, seem to overlap.
John David Baker, a new hire from East Carolina to replace Charlie Weis Jr., is the offensive coordinator.
Joe Judge, in his third year with Ole Miss, has the title of offensive head coach. Judge is also listed as the quarterbacks coach.
Golding said John David Baker will call plays in game for the offense. Golding, a former defensive coordinator, will retain his duty as defensive play caller.
What's the difference between the roles for an offense head coach and an offensive coordinator?
Judge's title has an administrative focus. Baker's title allows him to coach the nitty-gritty on the field.
"Retaining Joe was really important for us for the development of the quarterback, but actually from a management standpoint too," Golding said. "There's so much in college football now with recruiting and retention, that actually designing plays right and focusing on techniques has been lost."
Judge has been a coach at the highest level. He led the New York Giants from 2020-21. Golding said that experience was a big reason why he wanted Judge to handle assorted duties like recruiting and managing personnel.
One of Judge's offseason responsibilities included testifying in court on behalf of quarterback Trinidad Chambliss in the case against the NCAA.
"The management of the people, the recruiting operation on that side of the ball, and all those type of things," Golding said. "So that way (Baker) can focus on the game plan, and on calling good plays and make sure we're using our pieces effectively."
Baker was at Ole Miss from 2021-23. He was the tight ends coach and took on the added the role of co-offensive coordinator in 2022-23 before leaving to be the offensive coordinator at ECU the last two seasons.
By not piling on administrative duties to Baker's plate, it allows him to focus on installing his up-tempo offense, familiarizing himself with Chambliss and teaching the players the minutiae in practice drills.
There will still be some overlap, but the roles are distinct in the spring.
"At some point, they'll all be involved in it," Golding said. "They get in one room and we talk and all those things. But as far as what your job description is to make sure we're using our time efficiently."
