Why Jets haven't signed Russell Wilson to help QB depth chart originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The New York Jets don't have an inspiring QB depth chart at the moment.

Their lone veteran is Geno Smith. They've also got Brady Cook, Bailey Zappe, and fourth-round rookie Cade Klubnik.

Is that even close to good enough? Probably not, but there aren't tons of options remaining.

They do know Russell Wilson is available, and Russ has said he has an offer from the Jets.

But right now, Wilson isn't a member of the Jets, at least not yet.

What's happening with Jets and Russell Wilson?

Russ hasn't signed yet in part because he's considering working in a TV gig with CBS.

There are other factors at play, too.

The Jets don't want to overcrowd their quarterback depth chart in a way that stops them from seeing what Klubnik might be able to provide.

Klubnik was a top-tier recruit who went to Clemson and was great in 2024 before regressing a bit in 2025.

"Quarterback Geno Smith is the undisputed starter for 2026," ESPN's Rich Cimini wrote recently. "Beyond that, it's anybody's guess. There's no heir apparent on the roster. Perhaps that player will arrive via the 2027 draft. For now, Klubnik will get a chance to show he belongs."

So if Wilson came in, it would further prevent Klubnik from getting any chance to prove himself.

The Giants just did that last year with Russ and Jameis Winston on board, although Jaxson Dart broke through quickly anyway.

Keep an eye on Wilson, but nothing is a given when it comes to the Jets.
