Why Doue brothers Desire, Guela play for different countries at World Cup with France, Ivory Coast originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Désiré and Guéla Doué are a pair of brothers playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
They aren't playing for the same country, though. Desire suits up for France, while Guela plays for the Ivory Coast.
Both are in the knockout rounds, and both are talented players.
Desire is likely more known around the world as a star for PSG at the club level on the wing.
Guela plays more at the defensive end of the pitch, and he suits up at the club level for Strasbourg, also in France.
At the World Cup, they'll be rooting for one another, as long as they don't face each other.

Why do the Doue brothers play for different countries?
They were both eligible to play for France and Ivory Coast, and they chose one apiece.
Guela, the older brother, likely wasn't in position for a France call-up when he was choosing his national team.
That led him to Ivory Coast, the home of their father.
Desire had both choices, and he went with France, the home of their mother.

They have actually faced each other in an international friendly.
They also both played at club level for Rennes, too, one other link between brothers.
Right now, they're both trying to hoist the biggest trophy in the sport.
