Just when you thought the paddock was totally divided over Max Verstappen’s endless complaining about the 2026 engine regulations, an incredibly unexpected ally has entered the chat.

If you remember from earlier this weekend, former Haas boss Guenther Steiner essentially accused the four-time world champion of playing dirty political games. The narrative going around is that Max is only trashing the new rules to force the FIA into changing them for Red Bull’s benefit. But Sky Sports lead commentator David Croft just stepped up to completely shut that theory down.

“The Courage of His Convictions”

During a recent broadcast of the Sky Sports F1 Show, Croft delivered a massive defense of the Dutchman’s character. As highlighted by the fan account @verstappenews on X, Crofty insists that Max’s intense criticism of the new rules isn’t just “idle threats for the benefit of politics”.

Croft pointed out something that many critics seem to conveniently forget: Max has been warning everyone about this exact disaster for years. “He’s stayed very consistent for the last two and a half to three years on this current formula in Formula 1, that he doesn’t agree with it,” Croft stated.

The 2026 regulations completely moved the championship away from the ground effect era, introducing a highly controversial fifty-fifty power split between the internal combustion engine and electric battery power. Max recognized very early on that these rules were going to create heavy, battery-drained cars, and he was brave enough to speak out long before any other driver dared to publicly criticize the FIA.

No Politics, Just Max Verstappen Being Max Verstappen

What makes Croft’s defense so compelling is how he separates Max the driver from Red Bull the team. If Laurent Mekies and Red Bull are trying to force rule changes behind the scenes, Max isn’t doing their dirty work.

“I think he’s just saying, and he’s being Max, he’s saying what he believes is right,” Croft explained. “And that’s the refreshing thing about Max: he has the courage of his convictions.”

Let’s be brutally honest, how many drivers on the current grid would actually threaten to quit the sport at the peak of their career just because the cars aren’t fun to drive anymore?

Croft has officially gone on the record, warning that Verstappen’s retirement threats are absolutely “not empty”. Maybe it’s time the FIA actually starts listening before they lose their biggest box office draw.
