Who won the Copa del Rey final? Score, result from Atletico Madrid vs. Real Sociedad game originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Contested since 1903 in the early days of Spanish football, the Copa del Rey is considered the pre-eminent knockout competition in the country.
Last season Barcelona and Real Madrid contested the final of this competition, but this season both La Liga giants were bounced from the tournament earlier than anticipated.
It left the tournament field wide open, and two teams who have not lifted this trophy for some time have looked to take advantage. Atletico Madrid have not won the Copa del Rey title since 2013, over a decade without lifting the trophy, while Real Sociedad won it in the delayed 2019/20 competition disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
With those two teams clashing in Seville, The Sporting News has all the details from this year's trophy match.

Who won the 2026 Copa del Rey final?
The 2026 Copa del Rey final was won by Real Sociedad who secured the trophy on a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in regulation.La Real used the first minute and last minute of the first half to secure a lead into the halftime break, as Ander Barrenetxea struck in under 60 seconds, and captain Mikel Oyarzabal deposited a penalty just before the end of the half, goals which bracketed Ademola Lookman's 19th-minute goal for Atletico Madrid.
Atleti dominated the ball throughout the game, holding 61% of the possession, but they were matched by Real Sociedad in the shots department for most of the way. They started to take command of the game late, however, and Julian Alvarez struck with an equaliser in the 85th minute after an absolutely delicious touch to send his defender into next week.

The match progressed to a penalty shootout, where Real Sociedad goalkeeper Unai Marrero saved the first two Atletico Madrid penalties by Alexander Sorloth and Julian Alvarez. Orri Oskarsson missed next for Real Sociedad, but it wasn't enough for Atleti to turn the shootout around, and Pablo Marin scored the decisive take to secure the crown.
With the win, Real Sociedad manager Pellegrino Materazzo becomes the first American-born head coach to win a major European trophy.
Who has won the most Copa del Rey trophies?
The club with the most Copa del Rey titles is Barcelona, who have won the competition 32 times throughout the history of the event.
They won their first way back in 1910, and most recently lifted the trophy in 2025. They have won a Copa del Rey title in every single decade except the 1900's and the 1930's.
Second-most belongs to Athletic Club, who have 24 titles to their name. Most of their Copa del Rey silverware came in the early days of the competition, as they have just one title since the mid-1980's, coming in 2024.
Real Madrid are third with 20, having struggled in this competition compared to the success they have enjoyed in La Liga and Champions League play. They have just three Copa del Rey titles since the turn of the millenium, coming in 2011, 2014, and 2023.
Atletico Madrid have won the fourth-most, with 10 titles all-time. They last won the Copa del Rey in 2013, and prior to that in 1996.
