The New Orleans Saints have done a shocking amount of work this offseason, and it has been a welcome sight after a great end to the season. Although the team is still in its rebuild, the Saints have been very calculated in their decision-making and have done things that felt like obvious winning moves. Also, the Saints have done a great job dealing with three of the major remaining questions surrounding the team. First, they signed Cam Jordan to return to the team, then extended Alvin Kamara so he can play another year in New Orleans, and yesterday, the final one was dealt with.
Officially, the Saints signed star WR Chris Olave to a contract extension, and it was an excellent deal for both sides. Olave got paid like one of the top WRs in the NFL and more than his former college teammate, Garrett Wilson, and the Saints did not have to give top dollar while also considering potential injuries. With that contract extension done, the Saints can now focus on continuing to improve the team, the current roster, and planning for the future.
Speaking of the future, that's where we are going to focus on today. Any team in the NFL must plan for the future, or it will catch up and mess up plans. I have no doubt the Saints are already keeping Tyler Shough's potential 2029 extension in the back of their minds. Yes, they have no clue if that's even going to happen, but there's a chance. So planning for the future is important, and another contract extension may be on its way soon, even if it doesn't happen this offseason.
Chase Young has proved to be one of the best signings by the Saints in recent years. His value was at a career low, but the Saints took a chance on him, then saw enough to extend him again the next offseason. That is his current deal, and it is set to expire in 2027. New Orleans will need to see what Young does this season before that conversation starts, but next offseason is likely to be filled with headlines about a potential deal. Young's best years have occurred in New Orleans, and he has proven to be a franchise pass rusher. There's no reason for him to want to leave, even if he's not paid top dollar. He will also be 29 when the contract expires, which would be a factor. But it's likely that the Saints will get a deal done, making him the next player they extend to a pretty significant deal.
