Kolkata Knight Riders are staring down another leadership headache after Ajinkya Rahane's decision to hang up his boots across all formats, leaving the franchise scrambling once more to find someone to steer the ship heading into the next IPL season.
The veteran had been handed the captaincy soon after being signed at the auction, and now his exit means KKR must once again figure out who takes charge at a time when the side is hungry to get back among the title contenders.
This isn't new territory for KKR. Rarely has an IPL franchise leaned on the auction table quite as heavily to solve its captaincy question as Kolkata have over the years.

Their turnaround story really took off in 2011, when they brought in Gautam Gambhir and made him skipper straight away, a call that paid off handsomely as he steered the side to championships in 2012 and 2014.
Once Gambhir moved on to Delhi, KKR again went shopping externally, bringing in Dinesh Karthik ahead of the 2018 season and naming him captain. Karthik took the team to the playoffs before eventually stepping aside partway through the 2020 season, opening the door for another auction signing, Eoin Morgan, who would go on to lead them to the 2021 final.
The pattern held firm in 2022, when Shreyas Iyer arrived via the mega auction and was immediately trusted with the leadership role. They stood vindicated when Iyer lifted the trophy for KKR in 2024.
Once Iyer departed, the franchise circled back to the auction yet again, re-signing Rahane and installing him as captain for 2025. With his retirement now confirmed, KKR find themselves hunting for a fifth captain in roughly a decade, and the big question is whether they'll stick with their tested auction approach or finally hand the reins to someone already in the dressing room.

Who can replace Ajinkya Rahane at KKR?
Rinku Singh appears the most likely candidate. As one of the franchise's longest-tenured players, Rinku has grown into a genuine finisher and carries considerable weight among his teammates. The catch is that his hands-on captaincy experience remains fairly thin, which makes handing him the job a risky bet for a franchise eager for an immediate turnaround.
Ahead of IPL 2026, head coach Abhishek Nayar had already flagged Rinku as someone growing into a leadership role. Should he get the nod, Rinku would step in with a fairly promising, if limited, leadership resume.
He guided Meerut Mavericks to the UPT20 title in 2024, followed by a runners-up finish in 2025, winning 13 of 18 matches across those two campaigns. He has also skippered Uttar Pradesh in List A cricket since taking over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar for the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Another name already inside the KKR camp worth watching is Rovman Powell, who led West Indies in 37 T20Is between 2022 and 2024. His KKR involvement has been limited so far, two games in 2025 and 11 in 2026, but his international captaincy background makes him a dark-horse option.
Sunil Narine represents another possible option. Having spent over ten years at KKR and featured in all three of their title-winning runs, few understand the franchise's culture as deeply as he does. But given where he is in his career, he isn't really a viable choice for anything beyond the short term.
Manish Pandey rounds out the list of internal names, bringing leadership credentials from his domestic cricket days, though he too is closer to the end of his IPL journey than the beginning, making him more of a stopgap than a long-term solution.

Rinku deserves the shot, even if it's a gamble
KKR's history shows a clear preference for battle-tested leaders bought at auction, but that formula hasn't always guaranteed stability, five captaincy changes in barely over ten years is hardly a sign of a settled system. Handing Rinku the armband would break from that pattern, but it might be exactly the kind of long-term investment the franchise needs.
Rinku has already shown flashes of composure under pressure as a player, and his domestic captaincy stints, while not headline-grabbing, suggest he understands the demands of leading a side. Nayar's comments make it clear the coaching staff already sees leadership qualities in him, and there's real value in building continuity around a player who isn't going anywhere in the next few years, unlike Narine or Pandey.
The risk, of course, is throwing an inexperienced leader into the deep end of a results-driven league where patience is in short supply. But KKR's constant chopping and changing at the top hasn't exactly been a formula for sustained success either. Backing Rinku now, even as a slight gamble, could finally give the franchise the stability it has lacked since Gambhir's departure, rather than repeating the same auction-driven cycle every couple of seasons.
If he fails to deliver, with just one season left in the current three-year IPL cycle running from 2025 to 2027, KKR might replace him by getting someone from the auction.
