NEW YORK — When the Mets traded for Freddy Peralta in January, they thought they were getting an ace. With Peralta’s track record, the Mets had to part with two of the best prospects in their farm system to get that deal done.
Peralta turned out to be a bust in a Mets uniform and on Sunday, during New York’s final game before the trade deadline, the Mets pulled the trigger on a Peralta trade.
Peralta is headed to the Rays in exchange for three prospects: outfielder Aidan Smith, right-hander Gary Gill Hill and second baseman Emilien Pitre. All three players are ranked in the Rays’ top-30 prospects on MLB Pipeline. Smith is considered Tampa’s No. 15 prospect, Hill is 26th and Pitre is 27th.

At this point, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Peralta’s tenure with the Mets came to an end this way. New York is a seller ahead of the deadline and Peralta will be a free agent this winter, so it would make no sense for the Mets to hold on to him for the rest of the season.
The Mets held a high asking price for Peralta even with the way the right-hander has struggled this season. Peralta posted a 4.99 ERA over 22 starts. That said, the Rays’ farm system is considered to be strong, so these players will undoubtedly enter the Mets’ system with higher rankings than where they stood with Tampa. Besides, those rankings are all subjective. Clearly, this was the return the Mets liked the best as they had other suitors in the Peralta sweepstakes.
