With the New England Patriots' first preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts coming up on Thursday, Aug. 13, here's a look at who The Providence Journal thinks will make the 53-man roster.
This projection is based on what we have seen firsthand at training camp over the last two weeks.
In: Drake Maye, Tommy DeVito and Behren Morton
Out: None
No surprises here. The three quarterbacks on the roster heading into training camp should be the three on the 53-man roster in September.
In: Rhamondre Stevenson, TreVeyon Henderson, Terrell Jennings and Reggie Gilliam
Out: Jam Miller, Lan Larison and Myles Montgomery
The No. 3 running back battle is likely to be based on performance in preseason games rather than training camp, but through 2½ weeks of camp, Jennings has looked the best. Larison might end up winning the spot if the team believes he can help out on special teams as a kick returner.
In: A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs, Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas, Efton Chism and Kyle Williams
Out: Kyle Dixon, Nick DeGennaro, Tejhaun Palmer, Cameron Dorner, Kobe Prentice
While Williams has looked like the odd man out in training camp so far, head coach Mike Vrabel has publicly given Williams a vote of confidence multiple times to seemingly secure his place on the roster. The only other receiver who has a chance of not making the 53-man roster is Boutte, but only if he's traded.
In: Hunter Henry, Eli Raridon and Tanner Arkin
Out: Jack Westover, CJ Dippre, Mitch Van Vooren
After Julian Hill went down with a season-ending injury, Raridon stepped into the No. 2 tight end role and created a battle for the No. 3 spot. Arkin currently leads the pack as his size and blocking ability have given him an edge, but Westover was heavily involved in the passing game on Monday’s practice. The New England Patriots’ first preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts will show which of the two has the early edge.
In: Will Campbell, Alijah Vera-Tucker, Jared Wilson, Mike Onwenu, Morgan Moses, Caleb Lomu, Ben Brown, Dametrious Crownover and Marcus Bryant
Out: Lorenz Metz, James Hudson III, Jacoby Rizy, Andrew Rupcich, JonDarius Morgan, and Mehki Butler
Bryant filled in for Campbell during team drills when Campbell sat out due to an injury and held his own. It’s still hard to tell who the final backups will be as the team has only practiced against each other, but Tuesday’s joint practice and Thursday’s preseason game against the Colts will almost certainly be indicators.
In: Dre’Mont Jones, Milton Williams, Christian Barmore, Harold Landry III, Gabe Jacas, Elijah Ponder, Cory Durden, Joshua Farmer, Eric Gregory and Bradyn Swinson
Out: Leonard Taylor III, Casey Rogers, Jeremiah Pharms Jr., Isaiah Iton, Quintayvious Hutchins and Xavier Holmes
The interior defensive line looks as strong as ever, but the edge rusher position is still a concern for the Patriots. Jacas is practicing with the team after finally signing his rookie contract, but is still working in a limited capacity as the team continues to manage his time. Meanwhile, Landry has yet to be activated off the physically unable to perform, or PUP, list and practice with the team, so it’s something to monitor, especially if he’s slow out of the gate on Week 1.
In: Robert Spillane, Christian Ellis, K.J. Britt, Namdi Obiazor and Chad Muma
Out: Riley Wilson, Jesse Luketa, Khalil Jacobs, and Amari Gainer
Muma impressed in camp as soon as the pads were donned. If he’s able to build on this momentum through the rest of camp and preseason, don’t be surprised if Muma earns himself a spot on the roster while giving the team some much-needed linebacker depth.
In: Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis III, Marcus Jones, Charles Woods and Karon Prunty
Out: Kindle Vildor, Kobee Minor, Marcellas Dial Jr., Brandon Crossley, Channing Canada and Kenneth Harris
With Muma projected to take the final spot on the roster, the Patriots are likely to carry five cornerbacks, with Minor and Vildor being the odd men out. Prunty, a fifth-round pick from this year’s draft, has filled in for Davis — who had missed practice since late July before returning on Monday, Aug. 10, opposite Gonzalez, and has done a good enough job to earn that final spot in the cornerback room.
In: Kevin Byard III, Craig Woodson, Dell Petus, John Saunders Jr. and Brenden Schooler
Out: Mike Brown, Peter Manuma and Eric Butler
The depth of the safeties has been a surprise this camp, as both Petus and Saunders Jr. have held the Patriots’ top wide receivers in check through coverage or breaking up passes.
In: Andy Borregales, Bryce Barringer and Julian Ashby
Out: None
Vrabel decided not to bring competition for either Borregales or Barringer this offseason in a decision that all but assures both players’ spots on the roster.
