Running back? Receiver? Tight end?

Those were the spots many expected the Broncos to go with their first pick in the 2025 NFL draft pick.

Nope.

Jahdae Barron is the selection, a move that surprised many. Here's what to know about Barron.

Who is Jahdae Barron?

Barron is a 5-foot-11, 194-pound cornerback out of Texas. He played in 56 games with 38 starts at Texas.

Barron won the 2024 Jim Thorpe Award as the top defensive back in the nation. He's a first-team All-American.

Barron had eight career interceptions, including five last season.

Why did Broncos pick Jahdae Barron?

The AFC West is loaded with good offenses and great quarterbacks, led by Kansas City star Patrick Mahomes. Best way to combat that? A great defense. That appears to be part of the Broncos stategy.

Denver has a star cornerback in Patrick Surtain II but offenses often avoided throwing at him. Another good DB could help force the hand of offenses.

"The size and tape work in his favor as a physical nickel who can be an early contributor and future starter, with the potential to cross-train as a safety," the NFL.com draft profile says of Barron.

Jahdae Barron scouting report

Barron spent time at Texas playing at corner, safety, nickel and dime.

"Barron holds a master’s degree in coverage schemes and has done a great job developing the mental part of his game, giving himself a headstart keying and diagnosing the quarterback and blocking scheme," wrote Dane Brugler, The Athletic's draft expert.
