And then there were eight.

The 2026 World Cup round of 32 is complete, and after another batch of exhilarating matches, only eight teams are still alive in the quest for soccer glory. All three host nations − the United States, Mexico and Canada − were denied the chance to win the title, and Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup career came to a close, but there still are plenty of headliners in the field. There will be a break in the action with no games on Wednesday, July 8, but the next round picks up the day after, and intensity will only be raised as we advance to the semifinals.

So, who is just three wins away from becoming World Cup champions?
