Now, Ohio State football is hiring a former NFL head coach with over a decade of experience in the league to be the Buckeyes' new offensive coordinator.

Arthur Smith most recently held that same role with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The position at Ohio State opened up after Brian Hartline departed to become the next head coach at South Florida.

The Dispatch confirmed on Jan. 24 that Ohio State is planning to hire Smith.

Smith was the offensive coordinator for the Steelers the past two seasons. He is the former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons and a longtime assistant in the NFL. He left Pittsburgh earlier this month after longtime coach Mike Tomlin stepped down after nearly two decades leading the franchise.

Smith played offensive guard for North Carolina from 2001 to 2005.

Before Pittsburgh, Smith was the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons for three seasons. He had a 7-10 record each of those seasons and was fired at the end of 2023-24.

After his playing career, Smith became a graduate assistant at North Carolina for the 2006 season. After that, he took his first NFL position as a defensive quality control coach in Washington until 2008. He made one more stop at the college level at Mississippi in 2010 as an administrative assistant.

That's when Smith, a Tennessee native, started his long run in the NFL. He was hired as a defensive assistant for his hometown Titans in 2011. He spent the rest of the decade with them, rising from quality control coach to assistant offensive line coach to tight ends coach. Smith was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2019.

With Smith as a coordinator, the Titans made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons, a run highlighted by an upset victory over the New England Patriots in quarterback Tom Brady's final year with the team. The Titans had the fourth-best scoring offense and the second-most rushing yards in the NFL with Smith as coordinator in 2020 and won the AFC South.

Smith's father, Frederick W. Smith, is the founder of the American shipping company FedEx. Founded in 1973 in Little Rock, Arkansas, the company began operations in Memphis, where Smith was born and raised. The FedEx headquarters is still there today.

Frederick W. Smith passed away in June 2025.
