Full disclosure: I'm a lifelong New York Knicks fan. So if I have any kind of vote here for whether the franchise should honor the 2025 NBA Cup winners with a banner, I hope it counts.
Because there's WAY too much being made out of the reported decision NOT to hang up a banner.
Per ESPN's Shams Charania, that was the cal. Why? We don't know yet. But we do know there will be a celebration on Friday with fans in New York. Which is good! And it should happen! As our Prince Grimes wrote on Wednesday, it's OK to celebrate a midseason tournament win.
It is an accomplishment, 100 percent. The Knicks are trying to win the bigger title for the first time in decades, so besting the teams in the tourney is as much of a step in that direction as anything, a team-jelling victory over a very tough San Antonio Spurs squad. It's a statement win for a team figuring out what ailed it after last year's Eastern Conference Finals loss.
Yes, the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers put up NBA Cup banners after their respective wins. It's worth noting that they also won NBA titles fairly recently, so maybe it's weird for the Knicks to celebrate a small victory instead of the one that could be their first since 1973.
But it's apparently a big enough deal that you have folks like Dwight Howard weighing in:
We are celebrating our wins. A piece of cloth doesn't change that. Heck, there's a banner at Madison Square Garden for Billy Joel, and even that's rubbing folks the wrong way (unless this is sarcasm, to which I apologize if I misread this) in the face of the Cup banner absence.
Let's all move on and focus on the big banner that could hang from the rafters at MSG next year.

The New York Knicks will not raise an NBA Cup championship banner at Madison Square Garden, sources tell ESPN. The Lakers and Bucks raised banners for NBA Cup titles over the last two years. Knicks will celebrate with home fans Friday.

I’m going to be second hand embarrassed if the Knicks don’t raise the NBA Cup Banner then don’t make it to the championship this year Celebrate your wins while you can

man how are we going to have Billy Joel banners hanging from the rafters but we’re too good to hang one for the championship won by the basketball team that plays in the arena https://t.co/zjQU9dAgMHpic.twitter.com/YhA4UCeSyA
