NEW YORK — A season ago against the lefty-dominated Yankees lineup, then-Mets right-hander Luis Severino never saw his former team.
Carlos Mendoza adjusted his rotation to deploy a trio of southpaws across a pair of two-game series, with Sean Manaea pitching twice against the Yankees and Jose Quintana and David Peterson each being featured once.
Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil each made two starts against the Mets, so this season's matchups will be far different with the pair dealing with injuries.
This time around, Mendoza did not maneuver any of the member of his starting rotation.
"Whoever we’re giving the ball, regardless of whether it’s the Yankees or whoever we’re playing, we like our chances," Mendoza said. "This wasn’t nothing like, ‘Oh, let’s make sure we get this guy and that guy,’ because we feel good about the five guys that we got there. It just happened to line up this way and we went with it."
The marquee matchup of the weekend might be on Sunday night as the Yankees' ace Max Fried gets the ball against David Peterson, who struck out eight in 4⅓ innings with one earned run allowed against the Yankees last June.
As a member of the Braves, Fried has faced the Mets 23 times, posting a 9-5 record with a 2.48 ERA and 113 strikeouts.
Here is the remainder of the pitching matchups and TV coverage information for this weekend's Subway Series:
Friday, May 16, WPIX/YES: Tylor Megill (3-3, 3.10) vs. Carlos Rodon (4-3, 3.29)
Saturday, May 17, SNY/YES: Griffin Canning (5-1, 2.36) vs. Clarke Schmidt (1-1, 4.73)
Sunday, May 18, ESPN: David Peterson (2-2, 3.05) vs. Max Fried (6-0, 1.11)
