Following a handful of additions at the Trade Deadline, the Chicago White Sox (59-52) and the Boston Red Sox (60-51) open a three-game series tonight at Fenway Park.
Boston’s flurry of trades yesterday was highlighted by the acquisition of catcher Adley Rutschman (Orioles)and reliever Erik Miller (Giants). After selling for years, the White Sox were buyers at the deadline. Chicago’s haul included pitchers Luis Castillo (Mariners) and Huascar Brazoban (Mets).
Chicago takes the field having won four of their last five games and continue to set the pace in the AL Central leading the Guardians by three games. The Red Sox surge north in the AL East continues. Fresh off a sweep of the Dodgers in LA over the weekend, the Red Sox have won eight of their last ten games. Boston is now within two games of second place New York and 5.5 games of the first place Rays. The Red Sox are four games up in the Wild Card chase.
Chicago sends right-hander Davis Martin (9-5, 3.62 ERA) to the mound. Martin may well have hit the proverbial wall. He has been beat up in his last two starts – eight earned runs allowed over just 11 innings – and in three of his last four (14 earned runs allowed over 20.2 innings). Patrick Sandoval (0-0, 3.32 ERA) takes the ball for the Red Sox. This will be Sandoval’s fifth start of the season. His last two starts have been stellar. The southpaw has allowed two runs over 9.2 innings with ten strikeouts.
Boston swept the White Sox in Chicago in early July outscoring them 20-7 over the course of the three games.
