The Houston Astros were looking to complete the sweep Sunday afternoon against the Chicago White Sox, but Chicago had other plans. The White Sox ended the Astros' five game winning streak with a 12-3 blowout at Rate Field.
Jeremy Peña did everything he could to keep the Astros alive. He kicked off the game with a solo homer in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to eight games and give Houston an early 1-0 lead.
He then added a second solo homer in the third inning, making him responsible for both of the Astros' first two runs. Peña has been absolutely on fire since returning from the IL and Sunday was no different.
Taylor Trammell added a solo homer in the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3 and give the Astros a brief moment of hope.
But then the sixth inning happened. Sam Antonacci led off with a double, and Miguel Vargas followed with a go-ahead two-run homer to put Chicago ahead for good at 5-3. The White Sox never looked back from there, piling on five more runs in the seventh to blow the game wide open at 12-3.
Ronel Blanco was on the mound for Houston in his second start since returning from Tommy John surgery. Here is a look at his line, per ESPN:
Blanco kept the Astros in it for five innings but could not get out of the sixth. De Los Santos came in after Blanco, then Ullola followed, but the damage was already done by then. It is worth remembering that Blanco is still just two starts into his return from major surgery. There is going to be some rust.
The White Sox hit a season high five home runs on the day. Munetaka Murakami had a career high six RBIs going 3-for-5 with two home runs. The White Sox came in having lost two straight and clearly had something to prove. They answered back in a big way and reminded everyone they are still the team to beat in the AL Central. Career highs and season highs were set on Sunday, just not by the Astros.
The five game winning streak was a real statement for this team. One bad game does not erase that. The Astros head to Los Angeles to face the Angels next and will need to bounce back quickly.
