White Sox catcher Edgar Quero shows he knows how to use ABS challenge system on Opening Day originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

There were 30 total ABS challenges in Major League Baseball on Thursday's Opening Day.

One player issued more challenges than any other on ball-strike calls: Chicago White Sox catcher Edgar Quero.

Thanks to awesome data from Baseball Savant, we know that Quero led the league on Opening Day both in the number of times he challenged and in the number of times he was correct.

Quero tapped his head four times behind the plate to challenge. He won three of those challenges.

The only other player to win multiple on Opening Day was Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez, who went 2-for-2.

As far as the White Sox are concerned, Quero was the only one to use a challenge on Opening Day. None of their hitters called for one.

It'll be fascinating to see if that continues. Some teams could decide they mostly want to save challenges for their catcher to use, believing him most reliable at getting calls right.

It's early, though, and there'll be some statistical noise on this for a while before it starts to stabilize.

Quero is in a key spot for himself early in the season. Once Kyle Teel comes back for injury, there'll be a balance for Chicago to strike as far as who gets how much playing time. For now, this is mostly Quero's gig, and if he keeps winning some extra strike calls back there like he did on Opening Day, he could keep getting chances to suit up behind the dish.
