“Yeah it’s Senior Night and the game is right. / Oh yeah, it’s Senior Night, oh, what a night.”
Those may not be the actual lyrics, but it’s Senior Night, so close enough.
I have always admired the way that North Carolina treats Senior Night — starting with Dean Smith and continuing with Roy Williams and now Hubert Davis — by starting all the seniors whether they be super stars or walk ons, and considering that every other year the game is against that team from Durham (who, by the way, does not show that same honor), it is even more impressive.
In the past 20 years, UNC has honored such seniors as David Noel, Tyler Hansborough, Danny Green, Tyler Zeller, Kennedy Meeks, Marcus Paige, Bryce Johnson, Theo Pinson, Joel Berry II, Luke Maye, Cameron Johnson, Armando Bacot, and RJ Davis.
This season, the Tar Heels will honor Seth Trimble and Elijah Davis, and though they will receive their laurels this evening, this particular post is looking at some seniors or classes that deserve a little more recognition.
So which former UNC senior or class deserves a little extra recognition?
For me, that honor goes to the class of 2005: Jawad Williams, Melvin Scott, and Jackie Manuel. All three were freshman during what was easily the worst season in North Carolina history; the dreaded 8-20 season of 2001-02 (and trust me, I was there, it was as bad as you’ve heard). Despite that, they all stuck with the team (transferring wasn’t as big back then as it was today, but I would not have blamed them for getting out when they could). In the end, they were rewarded with a national title, even though they got a lot of less recognition than younger guys like Sean May, Raymond Felton, and Marvin Williams.
So which senior or class do you think deserves a little extra recognition? Let us know in the comments below and give those guys that extra love you know they deserve.
