Lou Williams put Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry at the very top of his all-time point guard list, and he did not need much convincing to get there. The former Sixth Man of the Year took part in a blind ranking exercise on FanDuel’s Run It Back, revealing his top five point guards in NBA history one name at a time.

When Curry’s card came up, Williams wasted no time placing him at No. 1.

“Steph,” Williams said, before locking in the top spot.

The rest of his list rounded out with Magic Johnson at No. 2, Allen Iverson at No. 3, Derrick Rose at No. 4, and Bob Cousy at No. 5.

The ranking fits a pattern for Williams, who has been outspoken about where Curry belongs in basketball history. He has previously argued that Curry’s game mirrors Iverson’s more than a traditional floor general’s.

“Steph Curry identifies as much as a point guard as Allen Iverson was,” Williams said, according to SI. “You’re the point guard, you’re the guy that’s bringing the ball up the floor, but in essence, you’re a shooting guard.”

Williams has also used Curry as the measuring stick for greatness at the position when making the case for other point guards, previously comparing Derrick Rose’s impact on the game to the gap Curry eventually filled after Iverson’s career wound down.

Curry’s case for the top spot is not hard to make.

The two-time MVP and four-time NBA champion revolutionized how the game is played from beyond the arc, becoming the first unanimous MVP in league history and the sport’s all-time leader in made three-pointers.

His inclusion ahead of Magic Johnson, long considered the gold standard at the position for his all-around brilliance and five championships, reflects a growing willingness among former players to weigh Curry’s stylistic impact on modern basketball as heavily as traditional point guard metrics like playmaking and championships.

Whether or not fans agree with placing a modern-era shooter above pure floor generals like Magic and Cousy, Williams made his stance clear: for as much as Curry has changed the way the position is played, there is no one he would rather build a franchise around.
