It has been a roller coaster ride for Lance Leipold as he works to bring Kansas Football out of the basement.

After a 2-10 season in year one, Leipold helped the Jayhawks improve by four wins before a 9-4 campaign in 2023. That year, Kansas reached No. 19 in the AP Poll and was ranked No. 22 preseason in 2024.

Over the last two years, Kansas has finished 5-7 and missed bowl season. This has brought up questions about the direction of the team under Leipold.

Another question is, in a deep Big 12, where does Leipold rank among head coaches?

In a recent ranking put together by Jordan Mendoza of USA Today, Leipold came in at No. 11 out of 16 head coaches.

“Credit Leipold for instilling some belief Kansas could compete in football with that solid nine-win season in 2023 with a renovated stadium, but the Jayhawks haven’t been able to capitalize off of it completely. Leipold is coming off consecutive 5-7 seasons, with just two winning campaigns in his five years in the program. He does have plenty of runway for all that he’s done for Kansas, but the results need to start coming in.”
