Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown maintains some MVP support within the league.

The Athletic conducted an anonymous poll asking 159 players to pick this season's MVP. Brown received 13 votes (8.2 percent), tying Cade Cunningham and Luka Doncic for third place.

The trio trailed two recent MVPs in Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (39%) and Denver Nuggets big man Nikola Jokic (21.4%). One player explained that he backed Brown for keeping Boston in contention during a supposed gap year.

“In terms of what the team lost last year, to come in with the (low) expectations there were and to see the standings now, it’s because of him and the level of play he’s been at," the player said. "He does it on both ends at a super high level. He’s consistent every night."

Another player used the same label to praise Gilgeous-Alexander, who broke Wilt Chamberlain's NBA record for most consecutive 20-point games. The Thunder have a league-high 64 wins behind the reigning MVP, who's averaging 31.1 points in 68 games.

"Shai has been super consistent," a player said. "They’ve had injuries, and he’s stayed consistent. We take it for granted, (but) he scores at least 20 every night. He’s had a lot of his guys injured, and they’re still No. 1 in the West."

Brown has garnered some MVP backing by averaging a career-high 28.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per game this season. The Celtics are one win away from clinching the Eastern Conference's No. 2 seed despite spending most of the season without Jayson Tatum.

The 29-year-old is still highly unlikely to take home the honor. DraftKings and FanDuel now only list MVP odds for Gilgeous-Alexander, Jokic and San Antonio Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama, who received just eight votes in The Athletic poll.
