Major changes are coming to the PGA Tour in 2028, but when will the schedule be released?
The Tour announced Tuesday everything from a two-track system to a new normal of 90 Tour cards, to match play for the Tour Championship and the end of sponsor exemptions. There will now be a Championship Series and a Challenger Series, with a relegation and promotion system between the two. More details will be announced at a later date, including which events end up on what series and a specific schedule.
Rolapp, the PGA Tour's CEO, said the Tour has 10 of the 15 Championship Series regular season events lined up for 2028. The remaining five spots will either be filled by existing events or new markets.
"We look forward to announcing these events soon and plan to unveil the full Championship Series schedule in the first quarter of next year, and during this process, we will provide updates as elements are finalized, including press conferences at the TOUR Championship and around upcoming board meetings in September and November," Rolapp said.
The first PGA Tour event of the 2027 season is set for Jan. 21-24 at the American Express in La Quinta, California. With a first quarter expectation of announcing a schedule, it's likely the Tour will unveil the schedule ahead of the Players Championship next year.
As for the coming months, Rolapp said the Tour will continue to work on the intricate details with the schedule, but expect plenty of changes from what we know now of the PGA Tour.
