As the U.S. takes on Canada for gold in the Olympic men's hockey competition Sunday morning, fans may be wondering when the last time the USA won gold was. Because it's been over 40 years since we last saw the U.S. take the top podium spot, though anyone who pays close attention to Olympic hockey doesn't need to be told that. Many of us haven't seen the U.S. win in our lifetimes.

But when exactly was the last time the U.S. came away with gold? It was a moment many sports fans have surely heard about: the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" in Lake Placid, New York.

The U.S. beat the four-time defending champion Soviet Union in a massive upset with a team of mostly amateurs toppling a squad of seasoned pros. Which led to Al Michaels' famous call in the final seconds: "Do you believe in miracles? Yes!" It was the second ever gold medal for the U.S. after the 1960 victory. Since 1980, the USA has only won silver twice, in 2010 and 2002.
