Arizona State’s QB competition enters home stretch as camp begins

http://arizonasports.com/story/7523...on-enters-home-stretch-camp-tontozona-begins/

Quarterback Brady White was conducting his media interviews on Wednesday after practice when Manny Wilkins, his teammate and main competition, snuck up behind him and gave him a Wet Willy on camera.

The competition for Arizona State’s starting quarterback job may be ratcheting up a notch this week as the Sun Devils open training camp with one month left before their season opener, but offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey insists Wilkins, White and Bryce Perkins are still sitting around the Camp Tontozona fires at night, singing Kumbaya.

“They all are competitive, don’t get me wrong,” Lindsey said. “But I think they’re all Sun Devils. They want to win.”

Nobody outside the program can say for certain who will start behind center when ASU hosts Northern Arizona on Sept. 3 at Sun Devil Stadium. The safe bet is on the redshirt sophomore Wilkins, based on his extra year in the program, his nominal game experience and that big arm.

Others believe White, a redshirt freshman, has the greatest upside while a faction of Sun Devils insiders view Perkins, another redshirt freshman, as the darkhorse.

Coach Todd Graham didn’t provide any hints when he was asked, yet again, when he planned to name his starter.

“The day we play the first game,” he said, smiling. “Why would you do anything different? Our players know exactly where we’re at right now. I would never wait with my team to tell them who the starting quarterback is, but why would we give somebody an advantage by doing that?

Thankso for the article BIM, good read. I love the idea of White as the QB, clearly best best pure passer, but does he fit our BS read option bubble screen offense?

It would be nice to see a downfield passing attack with Brady White throwing to Tim White and N'Keal Harry

Who's the frontrunner? Its as clear as mud.

I am with 04 though, would love to see more of a downfield passing game, less read option. Just not sure White is the best passer yet, I have been reading good things about Perkins and Manny as well.

It is nice to have four 4 star players to choose from though. It's a good problem to have and one that we haven't had in the past.

Perkins is out of the running but supposedly not transferring per AZCentral. Could change positions.

And he has an injury that may sideline him for weeks

So we are down to Manny and White. Manny is a big time team leader, and may be better suited for ASU's offense, last year's version at least. White probably has more QB upside. We will have to see how it all shake's out, but Manny has been there an extra year and I think he may have an edge at this point.

You guys have another 4* Top 300 QB coming in next season, which will make the situation even more murky moving forward. Plus, he was recruited by this offensive regime. The others are Norvell's players.

Problem with having so many highly rated QBs on the roster is that there's only one football on the field and normally, those guys have little patience waiting around. You have to hope that a) the more athletic guys are willing to change positions or b) they can bide their time and wait for inevitable injuries.

It's sounding more and more like Wilkins is the front runner

Ya, that is what it sounds like from the reports on the first part of practice open to the media. Who knows what is going on in the closed practices though. Graham is all about ball security and whoever takes care of the ball will get the nod. If it is Manny, I wouldn't be suprised if White still gets some PT.

Per AZ Central, sounds like Manny is the presumed starter. He says they have known for weeks. The guy is just a stronger leader at this point, and I presume he is taking better care of the wall.

Given how green parts of our O-line is, White should see some action as well this year.
