New uniforms, huh?

So, we know the Washington Commanders owners are not going to put themselves through the politics of "Redskins" again. Remember, when the battle over the name was heating up, the other 31 NFL owners were nowhere to be found. The NFL "brotherhood" of owners (pun intended) did not, in any way, provide any indication that they would support the old name again.

So, the dignified logo of the 1972-2019 Redskins is not going to return. The owners don't want the trouble from the self-righteous opponents who would take up the cause, making their lives miserable. Thus, what will the logo of the "new" uniforms be? It's the worst-kept secret that the uniforms won't be new but will be a return to the Super Bowl era, when the Redskins appeared in four Super Bowls, winning three. Those were the 1982, 1983, 1987 and 1991 seasons.

It is a reasonable question to ask about a logo on the helmet. Will the Super Bowl-era uniforms continue to feature the current "W" on the side of the helmet? There is also the understandable question about the spear. There was a video of Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu sharpening the spear. Was the spear imagery merely a metaphor for the concept of the Commanders sharpening themselves for the season?

Or might the spear imagery been sort of a preview of the franchise returning to a logo from the past? It is no coincidence that majority owner Josh Harris, Mitchell Rales and Mark Ein are all local products. They certainly recall the "R" helmet of the 1970 and 1971 seasons. Even more, Rales and Harris being a few years older than Ein, also most likely recall from their youth the Redskins helmet for the 1965-1969 seasons which sported a logo of a spear and feather.

And why did the Commanders have Hall of Fame corner Darrell Green on the field with a spear during a 2025 home game? No, the owners are not going back to "Redskins" nor the logo of the Native American chief in headdress.

But it certainly looks like the spear that donned the helmets of Sonny Jurgensen, Sam Huff, Chris Hanburger, Larry Brown, Brig Owens, and Charley Taylor is making a return.
