AMES – The Iowa State women’s basketball team’s second game against Oklahoma State offered the Cyclones some much-needed redemption after suffering their worst loss of the season to the Cowgirls back in January.
Instead of getting revenge, the Cyclones experienced even more heartbreak.
The No. 25-ranked Cyclones suffered their second-straight loss with a 88-77 defeat to Oklahoma State on Feb. 25 at Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State fell to 21-8 on the season, including 9-8 in Big 12 Conference play.
Cyclones point guard Jada Williams finished with 19 points and 10 assists. Audi Crooks added 19 points. But it wasn't enough for Iowa State, which collapsed in the fourth quarter.
The two teams were deadlocked at halftime and after three quarters. Oklahoma State eventually pulled away in the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run.
That was more than enough for a struggling Cyclones team that went over 3 minutes without a basket in the final quarter.
Here's what we did and didn't like from Wednesday night's game:
Sydney Harris’ night: Iowa State’s lone senior made the most of her final regular season game at Hilton Coliseum. Harris finished with 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field, all from 3-point range. She set the tone early on by knocking down the first shot of the game, a 3-pointer, to give Iowa State a lead, just 14 seconds into the game.
Iowa State’s strong start: The Cyclones enjoyed one of their best starts of the season by opening the game with an 11-0 run. Iowa State made four of its first five shots from the field, including 3-pointers by Harris, Addy Brown and Ariana Jackson to put Oklahoma State into an early deficit.
Audi Crooks' second half performance: Oklahoma State did a great job of limiting Crooks' touches in the first half. Crooks tallied just six points on only 3-of-4 shooting from the field in the first two quarters. The Cowgirls limited Crooks with constant double teams that slowed down Iowa State's ability to get her the ball. Crooks got going in the second half, though, tallying 13 points. She finished the night with 19 to extend her double-digit scoring streak to 95 straight games, tops in the nation.
Iowa State’s response to the strong start: The great start for the Cyclones was quickly spoiled by Oklahoma State. The Cowgirls, who missed their first five shots of the game, eventually got going. An 11-0 run by Oklahoma State gave the Cowgirls their first lead of the game and completely ruined the early lead Iowa State built up.
Iowa State’s defense in the paint: Oklahoma State did a big bulk of its damage offensively near the hoop, outscoring Iowa State 46-26 in the paint. The Cyclones gave up easy baskets, missed on switches and gave the Cowgirls tons of open shots right a the hoop. Oklahoma State took advantage of constant pick and roll miscues by the Cyclones.
The fourth quarter stumble for the Cyclones: For the second straight game, Iowa State couldn’t close the deal. The Cyclones blew a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter over the weekend at TCU. This stumble wasn’t quite as bad. But after entering the fourth quarter in a tie game at home, the Cyclones certainly had a shot to rebound this time around. But Oklahoma State outscored Iowa State 28-17 in the final frame.
