Les Snead has made a lot of trades in his 15 years as the Los Angeles Rams’ general manager. He traded the farm for Jared Goff in 2016, acquired veterans such as Brandin Cooks, Jalen Ramsey and Marcus Peters, and also made a blockbuster deal for Matthew Stafford in 2021.

No trade is easy, but some are more difficult than others. In a recent interview with PFT Live at the annual league meeting, Snead was asked by Chris Simms to name the most challenging trade he’s ever made.

Snead went straight to Year 1 and picked the first big trade he ever made: moving back from No. 2 overall in the 2012 draft so that Washington could pick Robert Griffin III. In that deal, the Rams got three first-round picks and a second-rounder, only moving back four spots from No. 2 to 6 – which they then traded to the Cowboys for No. 14 overall.

“15 years ago, probably not experienced enough for the job, that was the trade where we did move back from two with Washington, and it was the whole RGIII trade,” Snead said. “There were a few teams that wanted in that spot so I guess the hardest part would’ve been, you’re a rookie GM and all of a sudden, you’re picking up a phone call to tell very a established GM/head coach, ‘You know what, we’re not choosing you. We’re going with Washington.’ But that was one that was probably fun to navigate. I remember one time going, we’re using the Jimmy Johnson point charts and I remember one time telling a well-established veteran, ‘Hey, I’m going to be honest with you, you’re using this points chart, this is a franchise-QB trade. I don’t think franchise QBs come with a point chart.’ So that was an interesting one going back.”

That was one of the most notable draft trades in league history, given the haul the Rams received for only moving back four spots. The fact that Snead made that deal just a month into his tenure as the Rams’ general manager only adds to the craziness of it.

The Rams may not have made the most of the picks they got in return, but they did find impactful players in Michael Brockers, Janoris Jenkins and Alec Ogletree. Other than that, it was mostly a flop.
