The Preakness Stakes, the middle jewel of the Triple Crown series, is just days away from revealing the post positions for the horses set to compete.
Traditionally held on the third Saturday in May, the Preakness Stakes will once again gather the nation’s top 14 three-year-old thoroughbreds. These horses will vie for glory over the challenging 1 3/16-mile distance at Laurel Park in Laurel, Maryland, due to renovations at the historic Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.
This year, hopes for a Triple Crown winner have been dashed after Kentucky Derby champion Golden Tempo was withdrawn from the Preakness Stakes. His trainer, Cherie DeVaux of Cherie DeVaux Racing, announced the decision earlier in the week, saying the horse’s overall well-being is the most important factor.
"Golden gave us the race of a lifetime in the Kentucky Derby, and we believe the best decision for him moving forward is to give him a little more time to recover after such a tremendous effort," DeVaux stated in a press release. "His health, happiness, and long-term future will always remain our top priority. We look forward to seeing him return to the track later this season, refreshed and ready to compete at his best."
This is not the first time a Derby winner has skipped the Preakness. Last year, trainer Bill Mott made a similar decision with Kentucky Derby victor Sovereignty, opting to rest his horse rather than pursue the demanding Triple Crown schedule. The choice paid off, as Sovereignty returned to capture the final jewel, the Belmont Stakes.
The extraordinary achievement of winning the Triple Crown has only occurred 13 times in more than a century of American horse racing. Justify, the most recent champion in 2018, joined an exclusive club that includes American Pharoah, who ended a 37-year drought in 2015.
