The Olympics are a fascinating blend of tradition and innovation. Some sports have been around for centuries while others merely pass in the wind — I'm looking at you, break dancing.
In Milan, the new sport is ski mountaineering, otherwise known as skimo. It's a combination of alpine climbing and backcountry skiing. Athletes ascend a mountain with either skis or on foot then descend down, where the fastest back wins gold.
While we've yet to see ski mountaineering in the Olympics, expect athletes from France, Italy and Switzerland to excel considering those countries' positions in the Alps.
Now, let's see what NBC has planned for coverage of the new sport.
