De’Aaron Fox suffered another brutal injury during Friday’s Game 3 of the West finals between the Spurs and Thunder. Fox was returning, missing Games 1 and 2 due to a right ankle injury. On Friday, he suffered a blow to the same ankle after OKC’s Lu Dort landed on his leg as the two dove for a loose ball.
The incident occurred late in the third quarter. Fox immediately looked to foul one of the Thunder’s players so he could exit. He seemed in a great deal of pain and limped off to the bench. Here’s the video:
De’Aaron Fox had 13 points, five rebounds and four assists in 25 minutes. He shot 6 of 11, including 1 of 5 from 3-point range. With a box plus-minus of +6, Fox was the second-best player for the Spurs behind Victor Wembanyama.
When Fox left, the Spurs trailed by nine. The Thunder extended their lead to 11 entering the fourth quarter.
De’Aaron Fox injury causes panic as Spurs look outmatched
The Spurs have looked outmatched in Games 2 and 3. De’Aaron Fox’s latest injury blow could only make matters worse. His experience and ball-handling against OKC’s ball-pressure is massive, and something rookie Dylan Harper and second-year guard Stephon Castle have struggled with thus far.
The Spurs will hope Fox hasn’t significantly reinjured his ankle, especially if they lose Game 3. That will restore the Thunder’s homecourt advantage and put immense pressure on San Antonio to protect homecourt in Game 4 and avoid a 3-1 deficit in Game 5 on the road.
De’Aaron Fox returns despite injury concerns
De’Aaron Fox returned to the floor in the fourth quarter despite concerns about his ankle injury. He moved better than expected initially, but was taken off the floor shortly after. Fox played two different stints, but it didn’t make a difference. He finished the night with 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four turnovers, shooting 7 of 14, including 1 of 6 from deep.
