What happened to Chase DeLauter? Why Guardians' breakout rookie is headed to injured list originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The 2026 season has, for the most part, been a fun one for the Cleveland Guardians. But, recently, things have gone very poorly.

Not only have they lost seven of their last 10 games, but they've also lost three players to injury. Jose Ramirez is going to miss quite some time, and Angel Martinez is also on the injured list and out for a while.

But, as the Guardians announced on Wednesday, they've also just lost Chase DeLauter to the injured list. The promising rookie outfielder is headed to the injured list due to a rib issue and will miss some time.

Why Chase DeLauter is headed to IL for Guardians

"Out in Milwaukee, the Guardians recalled Khalil Watson from Triple-A Columbus while placing Chase DeLauter (right side rib fracture) on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to June 14)," Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

The Guardians are losing DeLauter for some time due to a right rib fracture, which is a brutal injury for the young outfielder who's dealt with injury issues as he's worked his way up to the Major Leagues.

This season, DeLauter has been the Guardians' second-best hitter behind only Ramirez, as he has a .263 batting average, seven homers, 34 RBIs, and a solid .745 OPS.

While his incredibly hot start to the season didn't last long, he's still been a very productive hitter for the Guardians this season.

Losing him for any amount of time is going to sting, and now with Martinez and Ramirez also on the IL, Cleveland has arguably lost three of its top-six best hitters.

Watson is a fun prospect who is now set to make his debut, but it's a shame it's come at the same time as the team lost DeLauter to the injured list.

But, hopefully, DeLauter can heal up quickly, as if this injury lasts a while, the Guardians might be in dire straits with their offense down Ramirez until mid-to-late July.
