The Georgia Bulldogs took home the Athens Regional on Sunday with a 6-1 win over the Liberty Flames. However, it came at a price. Georgia outfielder Tre Phelps was ejected from the game for celebrating a two-run home run to give Georgia a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning. Phelps was ejected after he appeared to have words with the Liberty dugout following his home run.
However, Georgia baseball manager Wes Johnson clarified that Phelps' family was sitting above the Liberty dugout. Johnson himself was ejected from the Liberty game for defending Phelps, but he is not suspended for Game 1.
"As far as the Tre (Phelps) situation, for the record, Tre's family was sitting up in the stands," Georgia baseball manager Wes Johnson said after the game. "Tre was waving at his family. The umpires – whatever, you know I'm not an umpire – they thought he was talking to their dugout. Tre got ejected. Tre will miss Game 1 of the super regional. I also was ejected. I have no further penalties. That's the only statements that we can give and the NCAA will not be making a statement."
Phelps' suspension for Game 1 of the Athens Super Regional, where Georgia will face Mississippi State is a significant blow for UGA. Phelps has been elite at the plate this season. The junior has 22 home runs, 69 RBIs and is batting .384. Phelps has six hits, four RBIs and one home run in four games against Mississippi State this season. Georgia is 4-0 against Mississippi State entering the Athens Super Regional.
