The NFL League Meetings are off and running in Phoenix, Arizona, and the NFC was the focus of the morning at the annual coaches breakfast, but that didn’t stop the Tennessee Titans from coming up in conversation.
The Titans have made major changes during the offseason, and in the process, they have taken on an NFC feel by hiring Robert Saleh, Brian Daboll, and Gus Bradley away from the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants to rebuild the organization after firing Brian Callahan during the 2025 season.
Saleh and Bradley are coming over from the 49ers, and Jim Wyatt caught up with the 49ers head coach, Kyle Shanahan, to ask him his thoughts on Saleh getting a second chance to be a head coach.
“Not that happy, I didn’t want to lose him.” Shanhan said, “I was really happy for Robert. Robert deserves to be a head coach; he’s one of the league's better coaches. I thought he got a raw deal the first time, and I think he's in a good situation. We hated to lose him with the Niners, but we’re really happy for him. I know he’s gonna do a hell of a job for the team.”
Shanahan’s comments were what one would expect from an experienced head coach, but again did point out a theme that has been visible throughout the coaching search and hiring process: Saleh got a raw deal in New York. And the more time passes, that does appear to be the case.
In many ways, Saleh held up his end, transforming the Jets into one of the league's more dominant defenses before his firing, but the offense struggled with poor talent, the failed Aaron Rodgers experiment, and an uneven offensive staff. Leaving Saleh on the outside looking in.
Now in Nashville, with a solid offensive coordinator in Daboll and a general manager in Mike Borgonzi who appears to share a vision for rebuilding the organization, Saleh should have every chance to succeed.
