For the most part, the Commanders' pre-draft press conference on Tuesday, as expected, was rather generic. However, general manager Adam Peters was once asked about three players in particular.

John Keim, ESPN writer covering the Commanders, launched the Q&A inquiring about Johnny Newton, Ben Sinnott, and Jordan Magee. Keim said both Peters and assistant GM Lance Newmark could answer, as Keim wanted to know what their expectations were for the trio of players.

"It's cool you asked about those three," expressed Peters. "Because all three of them have been here working in this building for quite some time. We just started today with the offseason program (NFL rules), but they've been working their tails off really for the last couple of months. I see them in here almost every day. So, I am really excited about each of their future. You know, they're the right type of guys. They're the guys we want. They're Commanders. So, I think you'll see a big jump in each and every one of those guys play this year."

Indeed, all three Keim mentioned were drafted in 2024 by the Commanders in Peters' first draft as the general manager of an NFL team. Newton, a defensive tackle, was taken in Round 2 (36) out of Illinois. A tight end out of Kansas State, Sinnott was selected 53rd (Round 2) and Magee, out of Temple, a linebacker, was the 139th overall pick in the fifth round.

Though Sinnott played in all 17 games, he only caught five receptions for 28 yards in his rookie season. Fighting injuries, Magee only appeared in eight games. Playing mostly on special teams, Magee only played on 15 defensive snaps (3%). In 16 games, Newton in 16 games, contributed 44 total tackles (19 solo, 25 assisted, six for a loss and two quarterback sacks).

Newmark, in his response, said, "They're three guys that are extremely dedicated to getting better. They're Commanders. They've really worked hard this offseason to improve physically, mentally, every part of the game. They want to be contributors next year, and they are doing everything they can to do that. So, they're definitely wired the right way, and they've worked really hard to be in a position to do that."

Newton is essentially this year, bearing the weight of being the heir apparent to Jonathan Allen, who was recently released and signed with the Vikings. Sinnott is expected to develop and replace starter Zach Ertz, who may be planning for 2025 to be his last season.

Perhaps this will be the last NFL season for Bobby Wagner. If so, Magee needs to be healthy enough this year to gain plenty of reps and game snaps, preparing him for the 2026 season of being a starting linebacker in the NFL.
