CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Philadelphia 76ers still have work to do in the 2026 NBA draft. Despite not presently having a pick in the second round of the draft on Wednesday, President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey and Co. are still working and seeing possible options for them to finish up the draft.
With that being said, free agency is right around the corner. That period starts at 6 p.m. EDT on June 30 and the Sixers have their own free agents to worry about. Philadelphia can negotiate with its own free agents ahead of the official start time of the period.
With the selection of Alabama guard Labaron Philon with the No. 22 pick in Tuesday's first round, it does raise the question of what comes next for Quentin Grimes. He is one of those free agents and the addition of Philon gives a school of thought that Grimes may be headed out the door.
"This doesn't change it," Gansey said of the Philon pick possibly affecting free agency. "I mean, obviously, I wasn't here with Quentin, but I've heard a lot of great things, and we've been in contact with his representation, as well as Kelly’s (Oubre Jr.). So, they're two guys who, hopefully, we bring back, but you never know with free agency. I mean, that'll start here soon."
Grimes averaged 13.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.3 assists while shooting 33.4% from deep in his first full season in Philadelphia. He played for the Sixers on the $8.7 million qualifying offer after a long and tumultuous restricted free agency period in the summer of 2025.
Philon will certainly help the Sixers in a number of ways, but bringing Grimes--as well as Oubre--back appears to be in focus for this front office.
"Having Labaron, I mean, I think it just takes a little pressure off Tyrese (Maxey) and VJ (Edgecombe), where you have another ball handler, and we're gonna have to get another ball-handler, too," Gansey finished. "I mean, we just can't rely on a rookie point guard, but I just think he's just too talented, too young, that where he was at in the draft, we couldn't pass up."
