The Minnesota Vikings were expected to enter the 2026 NFL preseason with one of the league's most intriguing quarterback battles. Instead, veteran Kyler Murray has already been declared winner of the battle over third-year pro J.J. McCarthy.

Now, McCarthy will need to try to show Kevin O'Connell during the preseason he can still be trusted if anything goes wrong in the early stages of the season with Murray.

Both Murray and McCarthy are expected to play in Minnesota's preseason debut against New York. It isn't as clear exactly what John Harbaugh has planned for the Giants.
\n
However, its worth noting Harbaugh didn't play Lamar Jackson over his final four preseasons in Baltimore. Jaxson Dart may not get the exact same treatment, but if the second-year passer does see the field, one would imagine it would come in a sparing capacity.
